I was feeling kind of bummed about some work stuff, so my husband and I went to lunch together. We went to McDonald's and then drove to a park to sit and eat and just be alone. As soon as we stopped, I was feeling like I might be going low so I checked and sure enough I was 53. So I grabbed a couple fries and then guessed how many carbs I was going to have and how much insulin I needed to take. I took 4 units of Novolog based on past experience with McDonald's. I really thought that wasn't going to be enough. So I ate my lunch at a normal pace while my husband and I were talking. Almost as soon as I finished eating I felt really weird. Sometimes when I think I'm low I check and I'm actually not. So I really thought I was going to be high. By the time the 29 showed up on my meter I was feeling like I could pass out. In fact, I was feeling kind of out of it because I thought the 29 was the code for the strip. So I started drinking my husband's regular soda (I had a diet). And I kept digging in my purse for glucose tabs or a piece of candy or something. I really thought I had glucose tabs in my purse, but I found out differently today. I found some Smarties and ate those and drank more soda. I felt horrible and kept saying "This f*cking sucks." My wonderful husband was so calm and collected about it and was sort of cracking jokes to just make things feel normal. I just wanted to go to sleep. It was kind of scary fighting the urge to sleep. I guess that I was dropping when I was 53 and then to take more insulin on top of that even though I was eating a lot of carbs just made it worse or the insulin hit me before the carbs did. That makes the most sense now that I see it--that the insulin hit me before the carbs did. I think overall I just wasn't paying attention. (Sorry to post two meter pictures in a row, but this was pretty significant to me today.)
At shrines and "holy" places in Japan, you can often purchase a fortune. There are all kinds of different ways to get your fortune: I've seen numbered sticks, small drawers, picking a numbered ball. After you read your fortune, you have to decide if it's a good one or not. If you like it, you keep it. I still have one in my wallet from a few years ago...I'm sure it's expired by now! If you don't like your fortune, there are these structures near by. They are wood frames with rows of jute string. You tie your fortune to the strings and offer it up. You then try again for a fortune that suits you. I've also seen, at the smaller shrines, that people tie them onto nearby tree branches...that is usually pretty cool. It's interesting to see how many bad fortunes there are out there...and wouldn't it be nice if you could keep rolling the dice to get the fortune that you planned?
Today was just a day. Nothing spectacular about it. I went to work, came home, watched a movie, and now I shall go to bed. Depressingly boring. I haven't had much energy since I've been on this low carb diet. I needed a jump start back on the weight loss wagon after 3 weeks of leave/TDY and it's working. But I've realized I'm addicted to carbs and REALLY miss them. Especially on the bad days...carbs soothe me! I think I'm going to stick with this until the end of the week and then go back on Weight Watchers. I do much better on a plan that lets you eat what you want (even CoCo's!) as long as you watch portions and write EVERYTHING down. It's a great exercises for an analytical perfectionist!
With that I will end this depressingly boring post...I blame it on the negative carbohydrate balance.
